More on seasonality:If you’ve been with us from the start, you may remember the concept of seasonality from last September’s newsletter.When you get into gardening and other outdoor activities, you begin to appreciate what each season has to offer. For gardeners, fall is a season of bounty, both of food and friendship. It starts in a frenzy as harvests are preserved for winter storage. When that is done, the fall cleanup begins. Spent plants are pulled out, chopped, and sent to the compost heap. Pots are stacked, water reservoirs are drained, and tools are cleaned, sharpened, and greased before being stored for the winter. When the garden is finally put to bed, we suddenly have our evenings and weekends back. Fall is a social season. Big hearty meals are prepared to enjoy with friends and family. There are parades, fairs, and festivals. We go apple, pear, and pumpkin picking. The leaves change colour and we pile into cars to go hiking, bringing hot chocolate or cider in thermoses. And of course, there’s Thanksgiving and Christmas! So hang in there! Good luck with your preserving. Don’t cut corners in the fall cleanup, you’ll kick yourself in the spring. (Trust us.
