It’s time to plant out Frost Hardy Crops! That means Asparagus, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbages, Lettuce, Onions (sets and seeds), Parsley, Parsnips, Peas, Radishes, Rhubarb, Rutabagas, Spinach, Turnips, and Early Potatoes can go in the ground. Woohoo!!

And at this point in the season, anything in your garden plan that needed sowing indoors early should be started, with the exception of Melons and Squash. They shouldn’t really be started indoors early until 3-5 weeks before your Frost Tender plant out date.

This week I’m thinking about…

Finding comfort in the garden. I often mention how helpful gardening can be for emotional and mental wellbeing. That isn’t a novel idea. Most other gardeners will tell you the same and there’s plenty of research to back it up. However, I am lucky enough not to spend much time in any significant distress. So when my garden makes me feel better, my complaints weren’t usually more serious than day-to-day work/life stuff.

Don’t get me wrong. Too much of any stress isn’t good for you. And I would be the last person to minimize how challenging it can be to manage the day-to-day work/life stuff. I get migraines when I have too much in my calendar, even if it’s all fun. I wish I were joking. So when spending some time in the garden helps, it’s really valuable to me.

This week though, my garden’s soothing powers were put to the test. I spent Monday feeling very worried about the health of a loved one. Doing chores to pass the time, I was stopped in my tracks by how fragrant the tomato seedlings had become. I picked one up and inhaled deeply. I noticed an immediate and unexpected calming effect. Pretty magical.

I hope you don’t have any bad days on the horizon but if you do, try spending a minute in the garden if you can.
