This week I’ve been thinking about…Getting on a little soap box. After the scorcher of a summer we’ve just had, the cooler overnight lows have been nothing short of dreamy. I’m never more deliriously comfy than on those first few mornings when I can pull the covers up against the chilly morning air and snuggle down a little deeper into bed. These comforts seem more luxurious still when I contemplate the devastation this hot, dry summer has wreaked on our environment. As my brother and his fellow firefighters labour on, I wish for the daytime highs to continue their descent and for fall to be a very wet season indeed. And yet, with smoke-filled lungs, blistered feet, and shortened lifespans, most of Canada’s firefighters will be met with unemployment in the fall. Why is this? From disaster preparedness to emergency response, I believe their expertise and readiness are invaluable year-round. If you agree, please consider writing to your MP. Let’s take better care of the men and women who sacrifice so much for our safety.
