As May comes to a close, we can plant out semi-frost tender crops: snap beans, sweet corn, and tomatoes.

Remember to harden off young seedlings by slowly exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 3 to 7 days before transplanting them out permanently.

It’s also important to watch your local weather because these plants will definitely need protection in the event of a late spring frost.

This week I’ve been thinking about…

The ups and downs of the weather this time of year can be so draining. Just when I think the warm weather is here to stay, another cold snap rolls in and nights are back down to near freezing.

I guess that’s just the way it is in the spring. There’s a whole season of not-quite-summer and if it’s a little draining at times, why not look to Mother Nature for direction?

• Light fare is in season so eat nettles, dandelion greens, fiddleheads, asparagus, peas, radishes, and spinach to wake up digestion after winter’s heavier diet.

• Wildlife tuck themselves away when it’s dark, cold, and rainy so take that time to curl up with a book or get some extra sleep.

• Sunny days transform the natural world into a frenzy of growth and activity so use those days to charge your batteries and tackle larger tasks.
