Setting up an indoor grow station

For those of us starting seeds indoors early.

An indoor grow station is basically just a dedicated place where you can raise seedlings inside until it’s warm enough to transplant them outside.

What are you doing for the February long weekend?

Head to a forest!

One of the hardest parts about winter is how little time most of us spend outside compared to the rest of the year. So bundle up, get outside, and see if you can identify these different evergreen trees. Their needles are full of vitamin C and can be steeped for tea or used to infuse gin. Both great for sharing with a friend!

In Step 1 last month, we stratified our Echinacea seeds to make Whole Plant Echinacea Tincture. If you missed last month’s newsletter, you can click here to catch up.

Don’t worry, there’s still time to join in! Just be sure to complete the steps in both January and February’s newsletters this month.

Now for Step 2: Germination

Remove your seed tray from the freezer and allow it to thaw for 24 hours before unwrapping it. The growing medium should be moist to the touch. If it is dry and freezer burned, your seal was not air tight and the seeds may be dead. If this happens to you, you can chance it and move on to the next step or play it safe and start again. Just wrap the tray tighter this time.

The Process:

Place the unwrapped tray of stratified seed in a warm place. Mist it with water and cover it with a clear plastic dome to lock in moisture. We’ve placed our tray on a seed starting mat and covered the seeds with perlite to keep them nice and warm.

Check the tray daily, lifting the clear plastic dome to circulate the air and check for signs of mildew or germination. If you notice either, remove the dome completely. When germination begins, move the tray under grow lights.

Important: Water in the morning, not a night. Check the moisture of your tray every morning during these weeks. The growing medium should be damp but never soaked. As the dome is removed and the seedlings begin to grow, their needs will change. Like any infant, they require more consistent attention in this early stage than they will in maturity.
