It’s December 1st and the holiday season is upon us!

The days are short and the weather is cold. Wrap yourself in a blanket, brew a cup of tea, and dive into a good book.

This is our favourite month for cold weather. Try not to get caught up in the holiday stress and instead, lean into the cozy stuff.

And now without further ado:

Partings and Reunions

Saying goodbye is never easy.

December brings hard frost, and that means even the hardiest leafy greens are done for the season. Goodbye, fresh Arugula!

It’s Pear season, baby!

Pears will last 2-6 months in cold storage so head to your local farmers market to stock up. Enjoy them as a snack. Serve them as a dessert. Bake them, poach them, preserve them; ‘tis the season!

Homemade Gifts

Welcome to the wonderful world of homemade gifts!

As you learn and grow in the garden (pun intended) you might enjoy gifting the fruits of your labours to friends and family.

Jam, chutney, relish, conserve, cordial, oil infusions, dried tea and herbs, tinctures, salves, balms, pressed flowers… and so much more!

Planning

Gifts are often part of the garden plan.

If you’re new here and you don’t have homegrown goodies to gift, don’t worry! One of the best skills you’ll develop as a gardener is patience for the process. Keep an eye out for inspiration and build homemade gifts it into your plan for next year.

Seed catalogues will be mailed out around this time of year. Get yourself on a mailing list or two and start circling your favourites.

Overwintering Wildlife

Get into bird watching.

December is the perfect month to put out a bird feeder. Head into your local garden centre and chat with the staff about your space. Even the smallest gardens have room for a bird feeder. Keep it full to support your lovely overwintering birds and enjoy their visits all season long.
